End of an Era: E3 Officially Cancelled

December 13, 2023 by Alex Novichenko

The iconic Electronic Entertainment Expo, known as E3, is officially coming to an end. This major event, a central hub for the gaming industry in both the U.S. and internationally, has been canceled by its organizing body, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). ESA's president and CEO, Stanley Pierre-Louis, expressed in a statement to The Washington Post the shared passion for E3 within the industry, acknowledging the difficulty in letting go of such a significant event but emphasizing the need to adapt to new opportunities for connecting with fans and partners.

E3's decline started a few years back, marked by key participants like Sony, EA, and Nintendo withdrawing to host their own events during the same season. Competing events like Geoff Keighley's Summer Games Fest emerged, further challenging E3's dominance. The COVID-19 pandemic added to the challenges, leading to an all-digital format in 2021 that proved financially unviable, and the subsequent cancellation of the 2022 and 2023 editions.

Efforts to revive E3 were made, with convention organizer ReedPop stepping in, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The lack of interest from publishers and developers led to the cancellation of E3 2023 and the eventual dissolution of the partnership between ReedPop and the ESA. While there were rumors of a radical overhaul for a 2025 edition, these plans are now off the table with the official closure of E3.
