Ubisoft Cancels The Division Heartland
During Ubisoft's earnings briefing, the company announced the cancellation of The Division Heartland, which was planned as a free-to-play multiplayer spin-off.
Ubisoft management stated the decision was part of a broader strategy to increase the "selectivity of its investments." Resources from The Division Heartland are being redirected to "bigger opportunities" like XDefiant and the Rainbow Six series.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained that Heartland was "not aligned" with the company's business plans. Despite making a "significant" investment in Heartland, the exact budget remains undisclosed.
The cancellation surprised some, as indications suggested the game was nearly ready for release. Public testing had taken place, and gameplay footage was widely available, with the developer deep dive trailer showcasing an advanced stage of development.
While Heartland has been canceled, Ubisoft is proceeding with The Division 3, which may be featured at Ubisoft Forward in June. Additionally, The Division Resurgence, a mobile game, is set for release later this year.
